Display for automobiles, newly expected revenue sources of OLED

Display market for global automobiles has continued stable growth of approximately 10% yearly recently, and LG Display and Samsung Display do not save investments by paying attention to it as new application. In this regard, Senior Researcher Yang Seong-jin of LG Economic Research Institute lighted up the entry reason of display for automobiles such like creating effects of new revenue are anticipated.

Senior Researcher Yang said “Display market for automobiles has 10% volume of the whole display market and belongs to 2% levels of total cost, but automotive industry has been developed steadily through smart-car and connected-car etc. In contrast, display market has been withered gradually, and panel prices are being lowered continuously, and thus it is directly connecting to survival matters actually.” While stating display market for automobiles as an alternative for this problem, he revealed the reason by saying “The number of participating companies is a few, and average price of display panels for automobiles to which thorough commercialization is required is higher than mobile phone or tablet pc two or three times.”

In display market for automobiles, Innolux and AUO, CPT, Japan display, Sharp occupied about 70% of total market based on 2015 sales of Taiwan, and LG Display recorded 10% share uniquely in domestic, but Samsung Display, second mover, failed in entering ranks. However, LG Display announced a plan that they were planning to enter the market with POLED to which flexible function was available after having designated display for automobiles as a promotion business, and Samsung Display was known to set up a policy of progressing differentiation strategies on display for automobiles based on small& medium OLED technology, so market share is expected to be increased little by little.

<LG Display/Flexible Automotive Display, SID 2015>

In the display market having been stagnated currently, concentration on display market for automobiles would be resultantly necessary for high profits, and OLED panel could get opportunities of creating new revenue sources by overpassing mobile and tablet pc market, if OLED panel solves demanding requirements of display for automobiles.

As a response strategy for the future smartphone display market, Japan Display (JDI) nominated LTPS evolution. This is to continue the position that JDI achieved within the LCD market through LTPS technology in the OLED market using Advanced backplane technology.

JDI’s CTO, Hiroyuki Ohshima gave a keynote speech titled Future Perspective for Small to Medium-sized Displays in FineTech Japan 2016 (April 6-8), and emphasized that they will continue developing backplane technology prowess.

Furthermore, Ohshima stressed that whether the mobile display’s frontplane is IPS LCD or OLED, the key backplane technology is LTPS. he explained that unlike LCD’s stabilized technology, OLED still has issues that need to be solved such as high uniformity and stability. However, he added that OLED is the best technology to achieve flexible display comparing the merits of LCD and OLED.

Ohshima told the attendees that LTPS is a widely used technology applied to both LCD and OLED, has high electron mobility compared to other TFT technology, and high resolution, low power, etc. are possible. From 2015, JDI has been using 60 Hz Gen1 LTPS technology, and expected to use 30 Hz Gen2 Advanced LTPS from 2016, and Gen3 with 15 – 5 Hz from 2017. The evolved technology can greatly reduce energy consumption compared to the previous versions of the technology.

Furthermore, Ohshima is planning to respond to the small to medium-sized display market by developing in-cell touch, low power technology, etc. He added that small to medium-sized display, represented by smartphone, requires the integration of developed technology

FineTech Japan 2016 (April 6-8) is a display technology related exhibition held in Tokyo Big Sight. The 26th annual event is participated by approximately 260 companies including Samsung Display, BOE, and Japan Display.

Looking Ahead to 2016 OLED Industry through Keywords

  1. Flexible AMOLED Investment

In 2016, flexible AMOLED mass production line investment is expected to be actively carried out by Samsung Display, LG Display, BOE, and Japan Display. For Samsung Display to apply flexible AMOLED panel to the new Galaxy model, the mass production line investment is necessary. If they supply flexible AMOLED panel to Apple, volume of the flexible AMOLED mass production to be invested in 2016 is estimated to be grow significantly. LG Display also is expected to actively carry out flexible AMOLED line manufacturing equipment order for Gumi’s P6 line, as well as additional flexible AMOLED mass production line investment following Apple’s demand. BOE is estimated to seriously begin orders for Chengdu’s Gen6 45K flexible AMOLED mass production line.

  1. P10

With the announcement of new factory establishment and 1.84 billion KRW investment for part of facilities in Q4 2015, as the first step of the investment, LG Display began site construction for P10 line factory that can produce large area panel. However, the investment direction has not yet been decided. P10 could be directed to only producing large area LCD panel, large area OLED panel, small-to-medium size OLED panel, or large area and small-to-medium size OLED panel simultaneously. China’s Gen8 LCD facilities investment is quite advanced and BOE’s Gen10.5 LCD line investment has also been confirmed. As such how much LG Display’s large area LCD can bring profit has to be carefully considered. Additionally, with the increase of OLED TV consumption and the supply of OLED panel to Apple practically confirmed, OLED investment is essential. P10, Gen11 line, is the world’s largest factory site, and depending on the investment direction in 2016, it is estimated to affect OLED market’s opening time.

  1. Chinese OLED

Everdisplay is supplying AMOLED panel to some several Chinese set companies, and Visionox is also expected to actively supply AMOLED panel from 2016. As such, most of Chinese OLED panel companies’ OLED mass production preparation is anticipated to conclude in 2016. Accordingly, second investment by companies including Everdisplay, Visionox, and Tianma is analyzed to be possible and serious movement by China’s OLED industry could occur.

  1. Evaporation Equipment

Flexible AMOLED mass production line investment by Samsung Display, LG Display, Japan Display, and BOE, and other Chinese OLED panel companies’ additional installation are expected to be actively carried out from 2016. Amidst this, order of evaporation equipment, OLED production’s essential component, is expected to be an issue.

Evaporation equipment currently being used in mass production is mostly Japanese Canon Tokki’s. As this evaporation equipment has been verified in mass production, it is estimated that most companies, including Samsung Display, LG Display, BOE, and JDI, will want to order Canon Tokki’s evaporation equipment. However, as the production capa. of Canon Tokki’s evaporation equipment is limited, the issue is expected to be which panel company will be able to order early. At the same time, this could be a new opportunity for Korean evaporation equipment companies.

  1. Samsung OLED TV

At present, the TV industry trend is moving to OLED from LCD. Accordingly, Samsung Display is continuing research to resume their large area OLED for TV panel business. It is analyzed that Samsung Display possesses RGB OLED technology that uses SMS evaporation method, white OLED, and solution process OLED technology. However, as each technology has its drawbacks, they are carefully considering future directions. First, RGB OLED technology is estimated to lack Gen8 mother glass substrate evaporation equipment at present. Solution process OLED method has low material performance. For white OLED, as the key patents are owned by LG Display, technology that avoids these has to be first developed. Therefore, much attention is focused on which technology Samsung Display will use and invest in production line to enter the TV market.

Apple’s Next iPhone, Can Flexible OLED Be Applied?

Smartphone’s hardware performance has improved as much as possible and can no longer be the differential point within the market. Following this, Samsung’s Galaxy Note 4 Edge and S6 Edge, and LG’s G-flex series are differentiating themselves from existing products through flexible (plastic) AMOLED panel applied new designs and functions. Particularly, Galaxy S6 Edge’s higher than anticipated demand means that the ratio between total Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge demand was expected to be approximately between 8:2 and 7:3, but at present it is estimated to be 5:5. To meet this demand, Samsung Display began actively operating A3 line, and carried out investment to convert A2 rigid line to flexible line.

As interest in flexible OLED is rising within the next generation smartphone market, there is much talk that Apple will also apply flexible OLED to the next product. UBI Research’s Flexible OLED Annual Report, published on 18 June, analyzed Apple’s flexible OLED application potential and forecast scenario.

According to the Flexible OLED Annual Report, other than Samsung Display, LG Display is the only company with the technology to mass produce flexible AMOLED. Japan Display and AUO also possess flexible AMOLED production technology and with investment, mass production is analyzed to be possible. Therefore, for the Apple to apply flexible OLED to the iPhone series to be released in 2017, the Gen 6 flexible AMOLED line investment of LG Display, Japan Display, or AUO has to be carried out within 2015. However, as Japan Display and AUO’s mass production technology has not been verified, depending on the currently mass producing LG Display’s Gen 6 line investment timing the flexible OLED applied iPhone release date will be decided.

As the results of analyzing future model’s shipment based on the analysis of iPhone series’ sales progress so far, to meet the demand for Apple’s flexible AMOLED applied model’s shipment in 2020, approximately 170K monthly capa. by Gen 6 (considering operation and yield rate) is needed. Considering the recent trend of 20K capa. per 1 line, 8 or 9 flexible AMOLED line are required, and Apple’s future flexible AMOLED line investment is estimated to be actively carried out.

On the other hand, flexible AMOLED market is forecast to grow at 57% CAGR from 2016, and show approximately US$ 35,000 million revenue in 2020.Flexible AMOLED Panel Market Forecast

[SID 2015] JDI’s Flexible White OLED Scheduler

Japan Display (JDI) revealed product level of flexible OLED exceeding the demonstration standard of OLED panel exhibition. JDI has been carrying out white OLED panel development for several years, and had shown 5.2 inch flexible AMOLED panel in Display Innovation 2014.

5.2 inch flexible OLED panel revealed in SID 2015 is similar to last year’s flexible panel. It is 5 inch FHD (423ppi) with 0.05mm thickness and pixel structure formed by combining white OLED and color filter. LTPS TFT was used for backplane.

Flexible OLED produced by Samsung Display and LG Display has RGB structure. While the resolution is FHD, as it uses pentile type drive the actual resolution is about 320ppi. However, flexible OLED revealed by JDI has white OLED structure, which is structurally similar to WRGB OLED for OLED TV currently being produced by LG Display.JDI1 JDI2

[SID2015] JDI, flexible white OLED

[Finetech Japan 2015] Mobile Display up to 700 ppi. How about OLED?

At Finetech Japan 2015 (April 6-8), vice president of LG Display, Yoon Sooyoung, forecast the display resolution would evolve to 700ppi UHD for differentiation in technology. Japan Display’s CBO Yoshiyuki Tsukizaki also disclosed that a person can perceive up to 700ppi and estimated that mobile display resolution would therefore develop up to 700ppi.

Currently mobile display is being mass produced at QHD (approx. 500ppi), and UHD resolution is known to being actively developed for LCD. It is analyzed that UHD mobile OLED panel development will be a necessity in order to adapt to the trend toward high resolution. OLED is being mass produced in RGB pixel structure where FMM (fine metal mask) is applied. However, as FMM production technology is difficult, QHD AMOLED panel is being mass produced via pentile pixel structure rather than real RBG pixel structure. Therefore, technology for realization of mobile UHD resolution is expected to be a key issue in future.

For the mobile UHD AMOLED panel realization, securing shadow mask technology that allows for UHD resolution is important. In Finetech Japan 2015, V-Technology exhibited FHM (fine hybrid mask) technology that can produce 700ppi or higher resolution. V-Technology further revealed that “resolution of up to 738ppi can be produced using laser patterning technology after the formation of polyimide film on top of Ni mask”.

Additionally, another method is where white OLED + color filter is applied which uses color filter patterning technology. This is a comparatively easier method for producing high resolution, and JDI is aiming for mass production using WRGB structure. Chinese latecomers are also examining application of white OLED + color filter structure for high resolution AMOLED panel production.

The attention of the industry is now focused on how OLED will react and what solution will be generated facing LCD sector that is evolving toward UHD mobile display.
