2018년 2H 시작, 중국 OLED 패널 업체들의 추격어디까지?

최근 중국으로의 OLED 디스플레이 패널 생산기술 유출 사건과 관련하여 디스플레이 산업이 시끌시끌하다.

2018년 현재, 중국내 OLED 생산라인을 보유하고 있는 업체는 총 5업체로 (BOE, Everdisplay, Tianma, Turly, Visionox) 이중 삼성전자의 Galaxy와 Apple의 iPhone등 프리미엄 스마트폰에 사용되는 플라스틱 기판을 사용하는 OLED 디스플레이(“Plastic OLED”)를 생산할 수 있는 라인을 가지고 있는 곳은 BOE 한 곳에 불과하다. 다른 패널 업체들은 올해와 내년 양산을 타겟으로 Plastic OLED 디스플레이를 생산할 수 있는 라인 건설을 진행하고 있다.

2020년 말까지 중국 패널 업체들이 양산을 계획하고 있는 월 생산 Capa는 약 250K로, 현재 삼성디스플레이의 월 생산 Capa(약 180K)를 넘어서는 수준이다. 중국이 본격적인 양산을 통해 비슷한 수준의 패널을 생산하게 될 경우 생산 원가 측면에서 한국은 중국을 이길 수 없는 구조임은 분명해 보인다. 6세대 Plastic OLED 디스플레이의 주 사용 어플리케이션이 스마트폰인데 전세계 스마트폰 시장은 2015년 이후 성장이 둔화되었으며 특히 프리미엄 스마트폰 시장은 신규시장이 거의 없는 상황이다. 스마트폰과 같은 매스 어플리케이션이 개발되지 않을 경우, 머지 않아 매우 큰 과잉공급과 이는 패널 가격의 하락으로 이어져 원가 경쟁력이 없는 패널 업체는 살아남기 힘들게 될 것이다.

일단은 Plastic OLED 디스플레이 생산은 높은 기술수준과 공정 노하우 등이 필요해 한국이 상당한 기술 우위에 있는 것으로 평가한다. 하지만 산업에서는 “중국제조 2025” 전략의 일환으로 자본을 앞세운 중국 정부의 패널업체 지원이 기술 격차를 빠른 시간안에 단축시킬 것으로 예상하고 있다.

2019년까지 양산을 앞두고 있는 중국 패널 업체들 역시 최근 더욱 적극적으로 한국의 주요 OLED 엔지니어 모셔가기를 하고 있는 것으로 알려지고 있다. BOE의 Plastic OLED 디스플레이를 생산하는 청두(B7) 공장에는 약 100여명에 가까운 한국 OLED 엔지니어가 있는 것으로 알려져 있으며 GVO도 최근 고액 연봉의 중요한 OLED 엔지니어들을 수명 고용한 것으로 파악되고 있다.  초기 연구개발 단계에서부터 어려움을 겪는 것으로 알려져 왔던 CSOT 역시 작년부터 주요 공정의 한국 OLED 엔지니어들을 고용 모바일 OLED 생산 라인 구축에 박차를 가하고 있는 것으로 보여진다. 이밖에 패널업체가 아닌 HKC 역시 OLED 엔지니어들 영입하고 있다고 조사되고 있으며 이는 LCD 라인 밖에 없는 HKC의 OLED 생산 라인 투자를 위한 밑 작업으로 해석되고 있으며 HKC는 최근 티안마 OLED 사업부 합병설에 이름을 올리기도 하였다.

2018년 현재를 기준으로 아직까지는 한국 패널 업체들이 생산하는 수준의 OLED 디스플레이 패널 양산이 가능한 중국의 패널 업체는 없다. 중국 패널 업체들의 생산능력 기준과 판매 구조는 대한민국과 달라 같은 기준으로 수율을 정의 하기는 어렵지만 양산라인이라고 알려져 있는 BOE의 청두(B7)공장의 수율은 여전히 1자리 숫자인 것으로 조사되고 있다. 다른 패널 업체들 역시 올해 안에 양산라인 가동을 한다고 해도 제품 품질과 수율문제는 2019년 상반기까지도 해결이 힘들것으로 예상하고 있다.

한국 경제에 상당부분 일조하는 디스플레이 산업이 지속적으로 전세계 디스플레이 산업에서 우위를 지키기 위해서는 다양한 제품 개발, 생산과 판매 전략을 통해 경쟁력을 유지해야 할 것이다. 또한 전세계 OLED 산업의 성장을 위해 디스플레이 산업의 규모가 커지고 많은 플레이어들이 다양한 어플리케이션에 OLED 패널을 공급하기 위해서는 중국 패널 업체들의 수율 확보가 관건일 것이다.

LG디스플레이, 2018년 OLED 매출 비중 2배로 확대

LG디스플레이는 25일 진행된 3분기 실적 컨퍼런스 콜을 통해 2018년까지 OLED 매출 비중을 10%에서 20%로, 2배 확대할 예정이라 밝혔다.

 

LG디스플레이 김상돈 전무는 ‘대형 OLED 생산 capa. 확대를 통해 OLED TV 출하량이 증가하고 있고, wallpaper와 CSO(crystal sound OLED) 등 프리미엄 신제품 등이 좋은 반응을 얻고 있다’며, ‘LCD TV와의 차별성이 인정되고 있다’고 설명했다.

 

이에 따라 ‘2017년 OLED TV 패널 출하량은 170만대로 예상하고 있다’며, ‘2018년에는 출하량이 250만~280만대, 2020년에는 650만대 이상이 될 것으로 기대하고 있다’고 말했다.

LG디스플레이는 ‘OLED 패널의 수익성을 확보하기 위해 경제적인 규모를 늘리고 있다’고 설명했다. 동시에 ‘재료비와 제반비를 줄이기 위해 중국에 OLED 패널 공장을 짓고, 효율적인 라인과 규모의 경제, eco system 확대 등을 통해 원가를 절감할 것’이라 덧붙였다.

2017년 4분기 출하 면적은 ‘연말 및 내년 춘절 등 성수기 대응 영향에 힘입어 한자리 수 중반 증가하고, 판가는 제품별, 사이즈별 수급 상황에 따라 차이는 있겠지만 전반적으로 하락할 것으로 예상되나 하락세는 점차 둔화될 것’이라 전망했다.
모바일용 디스플레이에 대해서는 현재 ‘LCD에서 POLED로의 전환되고 있다’며, ‘LCD패널의 매출이 전체 매출의 30%를 차지하고 있으나, 2019년 투자가 완료되는 시점에서 매출이 본격적으로 이루어질 것’이라 설명했다.

 

이어 ‘LG디스플레이는 장기적 미래 준비 계획으로 향후 OLED 중심의 투자를 진행할 예정인 가운데, 어려운 시장 환경이 지속될 수 있다는 보수적인 기조 하에 LCD 차별화 제품 위주의 수익성 극대화 및 OLED 사업 확대를 통한 수익성 개선 노력을 지속하겠다’고 덧붙였다.

 

한편, LG디스플레이는 판가 하락세 지속에도 불구하고 2017년 3분기 기준 매출 6조 9,731억원, 영업이익 5,860억원으로 22분기 연속 영업이익 흑자를 달성했다. 매출은 OLED TV 제품 확대 등 프리미엄 제품 강화 및 계절적 성수기에 따른 중소형 모바일 제품 출하 증가 영향으로 전분기 6조 6,289억원 대비 5%, 전년 동기 6조 7,238억원 대비 4% 증가했다.
2017년 3분기 매출액 기준 제품별 판매 비중은 TV용 패널이 40%, 모바일용 패널이 27%, 노트북 및 태블릿용 패널이 17%, 모니터용 패널이 16%를 차지한 것으로 나타났다.

According to 2017 OLED Encapsulation Annual Report published by UBI Research, of OLED encapsulation technology, TFE (thin film encapsulation) will be applied to approximately 70% of total OLED panel in 2021, and become the key encapsulation technology.

OLED display trend is heading toward minimizing bezel for full screen actualization from edge type, and flexible OLED is being considered as the most optimal display for full screen. As such, Chinese panel companies, as well as Samsung Display and LG Display, are concentrating on flexible OLED mass production line investment rather than rigid.

Flexible OLED must be thin and bendable; glass using frit encapsulation Is not suitable and TFE (thin film encapsulation) or hybrid encapsulation must be applied. TFE is a structure that is formed via laminating thin inorganic and organic materials. In the early stages of development, it had 11 layers of complex organic and inorganic material deposition with low yield. However, it now has been reduced to 3 layers and greatly improved productivity, yield, and cost and it is being applied to most of flexible OLED.

Hybrid encapsulation, which uses barrier film, is being applied to some flexible OLED. However, due to the high cost of barrier film and relatively thick thickness, recent investment is focused on TFE application.

According to UBI Research analyst Jang Hyunjun, TFE encapsulation is expected to continue to be applied to edge type and full screen type flexible OLED panel, and related manufacturing equipment and material market will carry on their growth.

The report explains that TFE’s key manufacturing equipment are inorganic material forming PECVD and organic material forming ink-jet printer. In particular, PECVD is used in inorganic material film formation of hybrid encapsulation as well as TFE. Therefore, PECVD market is estimated to record US$ 6,820 million in 2017-2021, and occupy approximately 62% of the total encapsulation manufacturing equipment market.

유비리서치에서 발간한 ‘2017 OLED Encapsulation Annual Report’에 따르면 OLED encapsulation 기술 중 TFE(thin film encapsulation)가 2021년 전체 OLED panel의 약 70%에 적용될 것이며, 핵심 encapsulation 기술이 될 것으로 내다봤다.

 

OLED display trend는 최근 edge type에서 bezel을 최소화하여 full screen을 구현하는 형태로 진행되고 있으며, flexible OLED가 full screen 구현에 최적화된 display로 손꼽히고 있다. 따라서 Samsung Display와 LG Display를 비롯한 중국 panel 업체들도 rigid가 아닌 flexible OLED 양산라인 투자에 주력하고 있는 상황이다.

Flexible OLED는 얇고, 휘어질 수 있어야 하므로 glass를 사용하는 frit encapsulation은 적합하지 않아 TFE(thin film encapsulation) 또는 hybrid encapsulation이 적용되어야 한다.

TFE는 얇은 무기물과 유기물을 적층하여 형성하는 구조로 개발 초기에는 11 layers의 유,무기 적층으로 복잡한 공정과 낮은 수율이었으나 현재는 3layers까지 감소시켜 생산성과 수율, 비용을 크게 향상되어 대부분의 flexible OLED에 적용되고 있다.

일부 flexible OLED에는 barrier film을 사용하는 hybrid encapsulation도 적용되고 있으나 높은 가격의 barrier film과 상대적으로 두꺼운 두께 등으로 인하여 최근 진행되고 있는 투자는 모두 TFE가 적용되고 있는 추세이다.

 

유비리서치의 장현준 선임연구원에 따르면 “TFE encapsulation은 edge type과 full screen type의 flexible OLED panel에 지속적으로 적용될 것으로 예상되며, 관련 장비와 재료시장이 지속적으로 성장할 것”이라 밝혔다.

 

보고서에 따르면 TFE의 핵심 장비는 무기물을 형성하는 PECVD와 유기물을 형성하는 ink-jet printer이며, 특히 PECVD는 TFE 뿐만 아니라 hybrid encapsulation의 무기막 형성에도 적용된다. 따라서 PECVD 시장은 2017년부터 2021년까지의 68.2억달러의 시장 규모로서 전체 encapsulation 장비시장에서 약 62%를 차지할 것으로 예상했다.

OLED smartphone market is growing prominently in the global market. Q2 2016 global 4~6 inch OLED panel shipment increased by 72% compared to the same period in 2015.

According to investigation by UBI Research, the shipment of OLED panel for smartphone in Q2 2016 is 88 million units, an increase of 72% compared to 51.2 million units in Q2 2015. This rapid growth of 4~6 inch OLED panel is led by key smartphone companies in Korea and China.

Samsung Electronics, a leading representative of OLED smartphone market, is expanding OLED smartphone products. The company recently announced flexible OLED panel equipped Galaxy Note 7, a first for a Galaxy Note series.

Not only Samsung, but Chinese companies are leading the market growth expanding the OLED application. In particular, Huawei’s smartphone business growth is significantly affecting OLED market. According to a market research company IDC, the global smartphone sales of the same period is only 3%. However, the sales of Huawei, possessing numerous OLED smartphone products, increased by 25% in H1 compared to the same period in 2015.

According to UBI Research, the total revenue of Q2 2016 global smartphone OLED panel market is USD 3,160 million, approximately 27% increase compared to the same period in 2015.

With the forecast of continued rapid growth of OLED lighting panel market, automotive OLED lighting panel in particular is expected to lead the market.
According to 2016 OLED Lighting Annual Report, published by UBI Research on 8 August, the global automotive OLED lighting panel market this year is only USD 3 million. However, the market is estimated to rapidly grow from 2017 and record USD 296 million in 2019, and exceed indoor OLED lighting panel market. The 2019 indoor OLED lighting ( down lighting ) panel market is expected to be USD 183 million.
Furthermore, in 2020, the automotive OLED lighting panel market is estimated to record USD 821 million and widen the gap with indoor OLED lighting market and its USD 494 million. From then on, the indoor OLED lighting market is estimated to show impressive growth and move past automotive sector sales from 2023. However, the automotive sector is expected to occupy major areas of OLED lighting market along with the indoor sector.
OLED is receiving much attention as automotive lighting panel due to advantages such as diverse designs and being less harmful to human eyes. The fact that curved design is possible with OLED is a particular merit for an automotive lighting. In fact, UBI Research estimates that flexible OLED within automotive OLED lighting market will maintain its 75% or higher market share in future.
UBI Research explained that as flexible is possible with OLED, there are many advantages in terms of design in automotive indoor lighting, and taillights. He added that with thinner and freer curved designs, the OLED lighting can be applied to anywhere in cars and this will become a new differentiation point for automotive companies.

Global lighting OLED panel market is rapidly growing each year. In 2020, it is expected to record USD 1,600 million, and LG Display is estimated to occupy 53%.
According to 2016 OLED Lighting Annual Report, published by UBI Research on 8 August, the global OLED lighting panel market is expected to record USD 114 million in 2016 and show CAGR of 66% in 2017-2025.
Advantages of OLED lighting includes high energy efficiency and diverse application areas. The fact that the restrictions on the use of incandescent light is being tightened is also one of the reasons that OLED lighting is receiving much attention. As such, the global OLED lighting panel market will continue to grow and record USD 1,600 million in 2020.
LG Display is the only company that carried out investment while possessing OLED lighting panel mass production technology. In early 2016, OLED lighting business was moved from LG Chem. to LG Display.
In March, LG Display decided on 15K monthly capa. of Gen5 OLED lighting panel mass production line investment, and is actively expanding this business. The company is expected to record 53% of 2020 global OLED lighting panel sales with USD 848 million.
In terms of application areas, general indoor downlight and automotive lighting are estimated to show rapid growth and occupy the largest proportion of the OLED lighting market. Furthermore, OLED lighting market is expanding in other areas such as outdoor, medical, and exhibition use.
UBI Research estimates that in 2025, the automotive OLED lighting panel market will grow to record USD 2,786 million, and indoor lighting panel market to USD 3,409 million.

상반기 글로벌 LCD TV 패널량 6% ↓…그래도 중국은 계속 늘려

2016년 상반기 LCD TV 패널 출하량이 전년 동기 대비 약 6% 줄어들었다고 디지타임즈가 한 컨설팅 업체의 자료를 인용해 보도했다. 반면 중화권 업체들은 이 같은 추세와 반대로 대형 LCD 생산량을 늘리고 있어 눈길을 끈다.

보도에 따르면 상반기 글로벌 TV LCD 패널 출하량은 12400만개로 2015년 상반기에 비해 약 5.9% 가량 줄었다. 하지만 전체 LCD 패널 출하량은 4% 늘었다. 이는 평균 사이즈의 패널 수가 증가했기 때문이다.

하지만 중국의 움직임은 이 같은 흐름과 대조된다. 상반기 글로벌 LCD 시장에서는 대형 LCD 출하량이 감소했지만 중국 주요 패널 업체들은 오히려 늘린 것으로 나타났다.

BOE는 지난 상반기 2250만개의 TVLCD 패널을 출하했다. 이는 전년동기 대비 47% 늘어난 수치다. CSOT1470만개의 TVLCD 패널을 출하, 전년동기 대배 30% 증가했다.

한편 유비산업리서치가 최근 발간한 ‘2016 OLED Manufacturing Equipment Annual Report’에 따르면 오는 2018년말까지 중국과 대만에서 투자가 결정되거나 검토되고 있는 대형 LCD 양산라인의 월 생산능력(캐파)는 총 528k.

이는 현재 한국의 현재 대형 LCD 양산라인의 80%에 달하는 규모에 해당한다.

On 26 June, Digitimes reported that Innolux, TFT-LCD panel company, is constructing the world’s first Gen8.6 LCD factory in Taiwan. Quoting the company’s associate vice president Hung Mao-sheng, Digitimes reported that Innolux will begin installation in June and could start mass production by the end of 2016.
The monthly capacity of the factory is to be 50,000 glass substrates, and expected to mass to produce TV panel for 50 inch, 58 inch, 100 inch as well as 45 inch and 23.6 inch. Hung described this company as the largest supplier of 23.6 inch and 40 inch TV panel at present.
As the average size of LCD TV is increasing, Innolux decided on the factory to maintain competitiveness and respond to market demand. It is organized into three businesses, mobile products, TV products and AII ( automotive, IT, industrial and special-use products such as medical and aviation ).
In January 2015, this company reduced its total number of employees to 68,000 from 98,000. The number of employees at LCD module production line decreased to 42,000 from 70,000,

Recently, DigiTimes reported that Chinese smartphone companies are discussing supply with Taiwanese panel companies due to panel shortage. According to the report, executives of Chinese smartphone companies such as ZTE, Vivo, GiONEE, etc. and Chinese panel companies including Truly recently met with Taiwanese panel companies, AUO, Innolux, Chunghwa Pictures Tubes, etc.

The reason that Chinese smartphone companies are experiencing the panel shortage is known to be because their panel suppliers reduced smartphone panel production due to too low prices. However, DigiTimes reported that Huawei is receiving relatively sufficient amount of panels from BOE, Tianma, etc.

Meanwhile, Skyworth, one of key Chinese OLED TV selling companies, showed lower than anticipated OLED TV sales in financial year of 2015 which ended in March. Chinese media reported that this is due to insufficient supply of OLED panel from LG Display.

ZTE 등 중국 스마트폰 업체들이 패널 수급이 충분하지 않아 대만 패널 업체들과 공급 논의를 하고 있다고 디지타임스가 3일 보도했다.

보도에 따르면 ZTE, Vivo, GiONEE 등 중국 스마트폰 업체 및 Truly 등 중국의 패널공급사 임원들은 최근 대만의 AUO, 이노룩스, 청화픽처 등 패널 업체들과 패널 공급 논의를 위한 미팅을 가졌다.

중국 스마트폰 업체들이 패널 부족에 시달리는 이유는, 이들에게 패널을 공급하던 업체들이 너무 낮은 가격 때문에 스마트폰용 패널 생산을 줄였기 때문인 것으로 알려졌다.

하지만 화웨이의 경우는 BOE, 티안마 등으로부터 비교적 충분한 패널을 공급받고 있다고 디지타임스는 보도했다.

한편 최근 중국에서 OLED TV를 판매하는 대표적인 업체인 Skyworth는 지난 3월에 마감된 회계연도 2015OLED TV 판매가 기대보다 부진한 것으로 나타났다. 이는 SkyworthLG디스플레이로부터 OLED 패널 공급을 충분히 받지 못하기 때문이라고 중국 언론들이 보도했다.

Samsung Display is drawing attention with 5 inch level VR (virtual Reality) device display with the highest resolution in the industry. The company also displayed Bio Blue, which minimized blue wavelength harmful to human eye.

At Society for Information Display 2016 ( SID 2016, 22-27 May), Samsung Display drew visitors’ attention with their new panel products such as OLED for VR and rollable OLED. At the exhibition booth, Samsung Display presented new 5.5 inch panel. The panel’s resolution, 806 ppi, is the highest pixel density of the 5 inch level VR panels published so far. The resolution is 3840 x 2160 with 306 nit brightness and 97% color gamut.

Additionally, Samsung Display revealed another OLED panel for VR named Bio Blue. Bio Blue minimized harmful blue light by adding light blue to the existing RGB pixel structure. Displaying Bio Blue, the company emphasized that OLED is better for eye health compared to LCD. Of the total blue spectrum, the proportion of blue light harmful to human eye is 66% for LCD and 32% for AMOLED. Samsung Display added that AMOLED will be able to reduce this figure to 6% in future.

Japan’s Nikkei recently reported that Japan’s Dai Nippon Printing will expand their capa. by 3 times. Dai Nippon Printing occupies 50% of the global OLED evaporation mask market as a dominating leader of the market.

Dai Nippon Printing is planning to invest USD 54.6 million in stages until 2020. Through this, the company is striving to strengthen their position as the evaporation mask leader in the OLED market where a rapid growth is expected.

Evaporation mask is used when red, green, and blue emitting materials are coated in order to produce OLED panel production. The performance of the mask is directly related to increasing the panel resolution. Dai Nippon Printing is aiming to increase their client base in future and achieve revenue of JPY 30,000 million in 2020, which is 3 times higher than the current revenue.

Nikkei also reported that Japan’s Screen Holdings began manufacturing equipment to mass produce OLED panel. The company only handled test production manufacturing equipment, but they recently developed product compatible with Gen6 substrate, and began supplying to panel mass production line from April. The manufacturing equipment is used to coat polyimide, high performance resin to produce OLED panel.

Display related Japanese industry, following Korean and Chinese, is also busy to seize the OLED market, which is expected to rapidly grow.

SID는 매년 세계 디스플레이 관련 학계와 기업의 첨단 기술 연구 논문을 발표하고 교류하는 세계 최고 권위의 국제 학회 및 전시회다.

이번 SID 2016에서 LG디스플레이는 세계 최초 OLED TV 출시를 시작으로 UHD 및 HDR 등 화질 향상으로 이어지는 OLED 시장을 선도하는 기술력을 인정 받아 ▲ OLED 및 LCD용 옥사이드 TFT의 발전 ▲OLED TV 신모델에 적용 가능한 WOLED 기술 등 2편의 공식 초청 논문을 포함해 OLED관련 8편, LCD관련 9편 등 총 20편의 논문을 발표할 계획이다.

우선 LG디스플레이 김성기 연구위원은 ‘OLED 및 LCD용 옥사이드 TFT의 발전(Oxide TFT Development for OLED and LCD Displays)’을 주제로 8세대 라인에서 개발한 고해상도 대면적 OLED TV와 고화질 LCD의 성능 향상, 공정 단순화에 적합한 옥사이드 TFT 구조에 대해 각각 발표한다.

더불어 최홍석 수석연구원은 ‘OLED TV 신모델에 적용 가능한 WOLED 기술(Recent Progress of White Light-Emitting Diodes for an application to new models of OLED TV)’을 주제로 현존 최강 화질로 평가 받고 있는 65, 77인치 TV용 UHD OLED 패널에 적용한 WOLED 구조에 휘도, 소비전력 등을 향상시키는 방법을 소개한다.

이외에도 LG디스플레이는 올해 SID 2016의 특별 주제인 자동차용 및 웨어러블 디스플레이를 비롯해 대형 OLED TV 제품의 소자 효율 및 구조 개선, LCD 성능 향상을 위한 공정 기술 및 신규 픽셀 구조 등 LG디스플레이만의 혁신적인 기술을 대거 소개하며 세계 디스플레이 리딩 기업으로서의 위상을 입증한다는 방침이다.

샤프, 3조 2천억원 손실…대형 적자에 1000명 또 감원

폭스콘 산하에 들어간 Sharp (샤프)가 2년 연속 대형 적자가 예상되는 가운데 1천명 감원을 추진 중이라고 일본 언론들이 보도했다.

3일 니케이, 니혼게이자이 등에 따르면 샤프는 2016년 3월 마감된 회계연도 2015년에 약 3000억엔(한화 3조2천억원)의 순 손실을 기록할 것으로 예상된다. 이는 2223억엔의 손실을 기록한 회계연도 2014년 대비 약 35% 손실폭이 확대된 수치다.

샤프가 큰 폭의 적자를 낸 주요한 요인 중 하나는 LCD 사업 부진이다. 특히 최대 수요처인 애플의 아이폰 패널 수요 감소로 인해 타격이 있었다. 이와 함께 태양 전지 사업도 순탄치 않아 이 부문을 접을 수도 있을 것으로 일본 언론들은 보도했다.

이에 따라 샤프는 임직원 1000명 감원을 추진 하고 있다. 샤프는 이미 지난 2012년에도 LCD 생산에 과도한 투자를 단행한 것이 역효과를 낳아 3000명의 직원을 줄였다. 이어 지난 2015년에도 재정 부족으로 인해 추가로 3200명을 감원한 바 있다.

한편 샤프의 공식 실적발표는 오는 5월 12일 이뤄질 예정이다.

2016 AMOLED Market, UBI Forecasts USD 14.8 Billion, IHS 15 Billion…Rapid Growth

The global AMOLED market is estimated to record USD 15 billion in 2016.

According to IHS, market research company, 2016 global AMOLED market is expected to record USD 15 billion, an increase of 25% from 2015. IHS estimates that OLED’s low yield and lifetime are improving, and new markets such as VR are expanding.

IHS’ forecast is similar to UBI Research’s estimation of USD 14.8 billion.

According to UBI Research’s 2016 OLED Display Annual Report, the global AMOLED market is expected to record USD 14.8 billion and maintain the high growth at CAGR of 49% until 2020. The company estimates that the fast growth will be possible due to active mass production of OLED panel for TV and flexible OLED panel for mobile device, and the start of latecomers’ mass production.

Both research companies expect high growth for OLED panel for smartphone and TV.

IHS forecasts that OLED equipped smartphone will occupy up to 21% of the total smartphone market, an increase of 4% from 2015. Furthermore, the company estimates that the OLED TV panel shipment will increase to over 900,000 units, an increase of 125% from last year.

For UBI Research, the company expects the shipment of 4-6 inch panel for smartphone to be 242.9 million units in this year’s OLED panel market. The shipment for 55 inch or larger large size panel for TV is expected to be 1.2 million units.

Meanwhile, this rapid growth of AMOLED market is being led by Korea. 2016 OLED Display Annual Report estimates that AMOLED panels to be produced in Korea are expected to be approximately 270 million units and occupy about 95% of the total shipment. Korea is also estimated to occupy 96% of the revenue for this market in 2016 with USD 14.218 billion.

 

LGD Records 40 billion KRW Profit Against Expectations…“1 Million OLED TV Panel to be Shipped 2016”

LG Display reported today unaudited earnings results based on consolidated K-IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards) for the three-month period ending March 31, 2016.

  • Revenue in the first quarter of 2016 decreased by 20% to KRW 5,989 billion from KRW 7,496 billion in the fourth quarter of 2015 and decreased by 15% from KRW 7,022 billion in the first quarter of 2015.
  • Operating profit in the first quarter of 2016 recorded KRW 40 billion, a quarter-on-quarter decrease of 34% from the operating profit of KRW 61 billion in the fourth quarter of 2015, and a year-on-year decrease of 95% from the operating profit of KRW 744 billion in the first quarter of 2015.
  • EBITDA in the first quarter of 2016 was KRW 853 billion, compared with EBITDA of KRW 882 billion in the fourth quarter of 2015 and with EBITDA of KRW 1,595 billion in the first quarter of 2015.
  • Net income in the first quarter of 2016 amounted to KRW 1 billion, compared with the net loss of KRW 14 billion in the fourth quarter of 2015, and a year-on-year decrease from the net income of KRW 476 billion in the first quarter of 2015.

LG Display announced its sixteenth straight quarterly operating profit at KRW 40 billion, which resulted from a thorough and profit-focused management based on differentiated technologies in response to a difficult market situation caused by panel oversupply and falling panel prices.

To deal with the difficult market situation, LG Display reduced the manufacturing of TV panels of 30-inches and below, which faced a large fall in prices, while expanding production of 40-inch range TV panels and those of 60-inch and above. The company also increased profitability by focusing on premium differentiated products based on M+ technology and maximized production efficiency in its overall operations by flexibly allocating production between IT product panels and TV panels.

Panels for TVs accounted for 38% of the revenue in the first quarter of 2016, tablets and notebook PCs for 24%, mobile devices for 23%, and desktop monitors for 15%.

With 77% in the liability-to-equity ratio, 153% in the current ratio, and 15% in the net debt-to-equity ratio as of March 31, 2016, the financial structure of the company remains stable.

LG Display will continue to increase profitability by concentrating on premium products such as Ultra HD TV panels based on its M+ technology to respond to a growing demand for large-size TVs, and make efforts to maximize efficiency by improving the manufacturing process in the second quarter of 2016.

Mr. Don Kim, CFO of LG Display, said “Panel shipments in the second quarter of 2016 are expected to increase by a mid-single digit percentage compared to the first quarter. Panel prices are expected to stabilize due to global sports events and an increase in new product shipments.”

 

◆ 65 inch, 30% of Total OLED Panel Shipment… 4-5 Trillion KRW Installation Investment

 

During the morning conference call on 27 April, LGD emphasized that the proportion of panel for ultra large size TV is increasing.

LGD reported that OLED panel shipment in Q1 2016 is slightly less than 200,000 units and estimated they will be able to ship 1 million units this year. While the 55 inch occupied over 85% of the total in 2015, in this year’s quarter the 55 inch proportion decreased slightly and 65 inch increased up to 30%.

LGD is operating OLED panel mass production line at 34,000 units per month as of H2 2015, and explained that the company will achieve Gen8 60,000 units capacity from Q2 2017. This year’s installation investment is expected to be of 4-5 trillion KRW. Along with this, LGD expects global oversupply of LTPS capacity, and revealed they will transform LTPS into plastic OLED (POLED) in stages.

LGD emphasized that the 55 inch FHD line’s golden yield has been almost achieved. The UHD section is also improving yield according to plan.

LED Market Revenue ↓ for First Time…2015, $14,300 Mn

Last year, the global LED market recorded its first decrease. This is analyzed to be due to aftermath of price competition.  the spread of OLED is also one of the reason.

According to recent report of LEDinside, the global LED market recorded revenue of US$ 14.32 billion in 2015. This is a 3% fall compared to 2014, and this is the first time that this market recorded a fall.

This is judged to be due to intense price competition from the oversupply. In fact, 2015 LED’s ASP (average selling price) fell by over 40% compared to 2014 due to price competition.

Along with this, OLED lighting market growth is also becoming one of the factors in LED market depression.

OLED lighting panel is more expensive, and still has technical issues. However, it is light and flexible, and technical issues are gradually improving; OLED lighting market is continuously growing. Above all, that it can create a new market that did not exist in the existing lighting sector is receiving much attention.

IDTechEx forecasts that the OLED lighting panel market will reach US$ 1.8 billion in 2025.

 

 

 

LCD or OLED…JDI CTO “Will Seize Mobile Market though LTPS”

As a response strategy for the future smartphone display market, Japan Display (JDI) nominated LTPS evolution. This is to continue the position that JDI achieved within the LCD market through LTPS technology in the OLED market using Advanced backplane technology.

JDI’s CTO, Hiroyuki Ohshima gave a keynote speech titled Future Perspective for Small to Medium-sized Displays in FineTech Japan 2016 (April 6-8), and emphasized that they will continue developing backplane technology prowess.

Furthermore, Ohshima stressed that whether the mobile display’s frontplane is IPS LCD or OLED, the key backplane technology is LTPS. he explained that unlike LCD’s stabilized technology, OLED still has issues that need to be solved such as high uniformity and stability. However, he added that OLED is the best technology to achieve flexible display comparing the merits of LCD and OLED.

Ohshima told the attendees that LTPS is a widely used technology applied to both LCD and OLED, has high electron mobility compared to other TFT technology, and high resolution, low power, etc. are possible. From 2015, JDI has been using 60 Hz Gen1 LTPS technology, and expected to use 30 Hz Gen2 Advanced LTPS from 2016, and Gen3 with 15 – 5 Hz from 2017. The evolved technology can greatly reduce energy consumption compared to the previous versions of the technology.

Furthermore, Ohshima is planning to respond to the small to medium-sized display market by developing in-cell touch, low power technology, etc. He added that small to medium-sized display, represented by smartphone, requires the integration of developed technology

FineTech Japan 2016 (April 6-8) is a display technology related exhibition held in Tokyo Big Sight. The 26th annual event is participated by approximately 260 companies including Samsung Display, BOE, and Japan Display.

Chunghwa Picture Tubes(CPT) today announced that CPT`s consolidated net sales for March 2016 approximated NT$3.24 billion , up 16.0% MoM and down 29.0% YoY. the company`s cumulative consolidated sales revenues from January to March 2016 is NT$9.5 billion, down 28.5% YoY.
March shipments of large-sized panels totaled 74 thousand, up 22% MoM and down 40.6% YoY. March shipments of S&M-sized panels totaled 33.88 million, up 6.4% MoM and down 9.8% YoY.

[Light+Building 2016]LG Display to Showcase Cutting-edge OLED Light Products and Solutions

LG Display announced today that it is showcasing its latest advanced OLED light products and solutions at Light+Building 2016, one of the leading global trade fairs for lighting and building services technology, in Frankfurt, Germany, from March 13th to 18th.

Eleven OLED light panels are being exhibited along with four solutions using the panels. LG Display is highlighting the key advantages of OLED light, including the design flexibility that makes it suitable for different applications and venues, as well as its supreme light quality which is closest to natural light, thereby making people feel comfortable and reducing eye fatigue.

The company is exhibiting four solutions using OLED light panels:

Flexible Solution Section

The flexible OLEDs can be used to create unique and creative decorative lighting fixtures. The creativity in design increases along with the length of the panels. The flexible OLED light panels are light-weight and unshatterable. There are applications using 200x50mm flexible panels and 406x50mm flexible panels. The main highlight in this section is an application using many 320x320mm flexible panels.

Transparent Connection Solution Section

The LG Display OLED light panel generates a floating light effect by attaching the panel to glass and providing power through metal mesh transparent conductive film. It can be applied to display cabinets, shelves, and furniture. Especially when it is applied to shelves at stores, the lack of heat preserves product quality while the lack of shadow makes them more visually appealing to customers. The simplicity of OLEDs opens up the possibilities of various designs and applications.

Mirror Solution Section

By embedding the OLEDs into mirrors, LG Display has created a solution that can have a variety of uses. It can be used as a mirror in upscale hospitality settings or as a unique display box in high-end retail stores. When other light sources are used in a mirror solution, they tend to make the mirror too thick whereas OLED keeps the mirror thin and also minimizes glare.

Module Solution Section

OLED light panels allow for easy installation in diverse settings. LG Display is introducing super-slim OLED light modules at the fair with a simple aluminum housing that connects multiple panels into each module, generating unique and sleek designs. The company is showcasing the module solutions in order to demonstrate how well OLED light can be applied to interior design and architecture. It is committed to develop other solutions in order to encourage more and more people to easily use OLED lights.

LG Chem., provide OLED lighting panel illuminate Tincan, the restaurant in London

LG Chem. continues its intense marketing activities for the OLED lighting. The OLED lighting panels were applied inside the Hanoak (traditional Korean house), remodeled with the IVAAIU City Planning last August, and the butterflied shaped lightings applying 240 OLED lighting panels were supplied to the caf? called Marley coffee in Itaewon. And the circular type OLED lighting panels were used to decorate Tincan, a newly opened pop-up restaurant in London in last September.

 

The OLED light used as the light source at Tincan was the Φ100 OLED Light panel (N6OA30) that the LG Chem. introduced early this year for the first time. The efficacy of the panel is 60lm/W, a high CRI is over 90, and the lifetime is 40,000 hours (LT70) at 3,000 cd/m2, with only 1mm in thickness. The Lamp was designed by the architectural design firm AL_A using 3D printing.

 

LG Chem. is leading the OLED lighting panel business most actively as making the announcement last September for the release of the OLED lighting panel in November which will be equivalent to a LED lighting with the efficacy of 100lm/W and the lifetime of 40,000, and it has secured various lighting companies like Acuity and Zumtobel as a client.

Life of OLED lighting panel, to reach LED

The life of OLED lighting panel is improving equal to the level of LED (more than 50,000 hours).

According to the NIKKEI report, Kaneka developed the OLED lighting panel with a lifetime of 50,000 hours. The panel is 8×8 cm in size and 1 mm thick, and samples are shipped to some lighting companies. Applying enhanced Blue material, the color change due to thermalization has dropped under 40% and the price is about the same.

KANEKA is producing OLED lighting panel with an annual capacity of about 20,000 panels. In the Lighting fair 2013, the company exhibited OLED lighting panels of 50x50mm and 80x80mm sizes in diverse colors of white, yellow, red, green, and blue which are currently sold at about 4,000 yen for the 50x50mm panel and 6,000 yen for the 80x80mm panel.

The OLED lighting panel with the longest lifetime on sale is LG Chem.’s 100x100mm panel with 80lm/W and 50,000 hours.

The UBI Research issued “2014 OLED lighting Report” prospecting the OLED lighting panel market to be open actively from 2015 and reach about US $ 4,700 million by 2020.

OLED lighting panel 수명, LED에 도달

OLED lighting panel의 수명이 LED(50,000시간 이상)와 비슷한 수준으로 향상되고 있다.

일본 NIKKEI에 따르면 Kaneka에서 수명 50,000시간의 OLED lighting panel을 개발했다고 보도했다. 8x8cm의 size에 1mm두께로서 일부 조명업체에 샘플출하를 시작하였고 개선된 Blue material을 적용하여 열화에 의한 색상 변화를 40%이하로 낮추었으며, 가격도 기존과 비슷한 수준이라고 밝혔다.

KANEKA는 연 2만장의 capa.로서 OLED lighting panel을 생산하고 있으며, Lighting fair 2013에서 50x50mm와 80x80mm size의 OLED lighting panel을 white와 yellow, red, green, blue의 다양한 색상의 panel을 적용한 제품들을 전시하였으며, 50x50mm panel은 약 4,000엔, 80x80mm panel은 약 6,000엔에 판매 중에 있다.

현재 시판중인 OLED lighting panel중 가장 높은 수명은 LG Chem.에서 판매되고 있는 100x100mm panel로서 80lm/W에 50,000시간이다.

한편 유비리서치에서 발간한 “2014 OLED lighting Report”에서는 OLED lighting panel 시장은 2015년부터 본격적으로 개화하기 시작하여 2020년에 약 US $ 4,700 million이 될 것으로 전망하고 있다.
