SMD to Invest in Equipment to Increase AMOLED Production for Mobile Devices Next Year 2009.11.18

Samsung SMD with the world¡¯s largest AMOLED production capability appears to make investment in AMOLED equipment next year to meet the rapidly growing demand for AMOLED.

Samsung Electronics announced that it will equip 10 million units, or 5 percent of 200 million units of mobile phones it plans to ship this year with AMOLED display. Other mobile phone manufacturers are also ordering an increasing volume of AMOLED panels. Under these market situations, SMD is expected to make an investment to increase production.

SMD recently added one 3.5G (730¡¿460mm) AMOLED vapor deposition machine to its 3rd production line at the factory in Cheon-an, increasing an annual capability to 24K (based on the volume of substrates used) when the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd lines are combined. The company also plans to invest in two 3.5G machines, doubling a total annual capability. It is expected to make an investment first in one 3.5G machine early next year which is likely to be Japanese-made.

LG Display is building a production line with 3.5G AMOLED vapor deposition equipment at its 8G LCD factory at Paju near Seoul, and is producing AMOLED for mobile devices at the 2G AMOLED line at the factory at Gumi in North Gyeongsang Province.

As Korean AMOLED companies have plans for investments and the AMOLED market started to expand in earnest, companies related to AMOLED material, component and equipment are expected to grow as well.
