In addition, flexible OLED shipments will grow at a CAGR of 41% starting in 2018, reaching 1,285 million units in 2022 with forecasted revenue of US$ 59.4 billion.

Recently, as the hardware technology of mobile devices has been leveled up, set makers targeting the premium market are trying to differentiate their products by adopting OLED. Especially, set makers are beginning to introduce flexible OLED capable of full screen, as the needs of consumers who want a wider screen in mobile devices (even in the same sizes) on the increase.

 

Accordingly, panel makers are continuing to invest in flexible OLED mass production. Since Chinese panel makers such as BOE, CSOT and Visionox are expected to start mass production of Gen6 flexible OLED starting in 2018, flexible OLED shipments will likely grow at an average growth rate of 59% per annum, reaching 354 million units by 2022.

최근 Mobile 기기의 하드웨어 기술이 상향 평준화 되면서 premium 시장을 목표로 하는 set 업체들은 OLED를 채용하며 제품 차별화를 시도하고 있다. 특히, 같은 size의 mobile 기기에서도 더 넓은 화면을 원하는 소비자들의 니즈가 증가함에 따라 set 업체들은 full screen이 가능한 flexible OLED를 도입하기 시작하였다.

Inspection and measuring equipment market for OLED mobile device is expected to reach US$6.63 billion from 2017 to 2021

As the panel problem of mobile devices has become a hassle for consumers, each panel maker is strengthening the relevant inspection and measurement activities.

 

Inspection and measurement can contribute not only to enhance the quality and performance of products but also to enhance the brand image through customer satisfaction. In addition, it is expected that productivity and yield can be improved by stabilizing the process since it is possible to check the normal state of products at each process in real time.

 

According to the ‘2017 Inspection and Measuring Equipment Report for OLED Mobile Device’ published by UBI Research, the inspection & measuring equipment market will reach a total of US$ 6.63 billion (about Korean Won 7.3 trillion) in the entire OLED equipment market from 2017 to 2021. In 2018, the investment for OLED inspection & measuring equipment is expected to be about US$ 1.45 billion (about KRW 1.6 trillion), with projected investment of US$ 1.6 billion (about KRW 1.8 trillion).

 

Choong Hoon Yi president of UBi Research announced that Samsung Display is currently in process of investment in A5 Gen6 flexible OLED line. LG Display is also reported to make a large-scale investment to raise OLED sales portion and Chinese OLED panel makers such as BOE and CSOT are making an active investment in OLED line. Hence, expectantly there will be constant market demand for inspection and measuring equipment.

 

In the report, the inspection and measuring equipment market from 2017 to 2021 is classified from various viewpoints. According to this report, the equipment used for substrate and TFT process will account for the biggest market share of 50.6% of the total inspection and measuring equipment market from 2017 to 2021. Market share of cell inspection equipment is projected as 29.7%, OLED pixel as 12.7%, and encapsulation as 7%, respectively.  In the equipment market classified by test items, the equipment used for pattern inspection will account for 33.1% of the total market. Market share of repair equipment is projected as 21.3%, and light on/off inspection equipment as 16.4%, respectively.

이충훈 대표이사는 Samsung Display는 A5 Gen6 flexible OLED line 투자를 진행중이며 LG Display는 OLED 매출 비중을 끌어올리기 위한 대규모 투자 내용 발표, BOE와 CSOT 등 중국의 OLED panel 업체들도 OLED 라인 투자를 적극적으로 진행하고 있기에 검사 · 측정장비는 지속적으로 수요가 있을 것으로 예상하고 있다.

 

본 보고서에서는 2017년부터 2021년까지의 검사 · 측정장비 시장을 다양한 관점에서 분류하여 전망하였다. 본 보고서에 따르면, 기판과 TFT에 사용되는 장비는 2017년부터 2021년까지 50.6%로 가장 큰 시장 점유율을 보이고 Cell은 29.7%, OLED 화소는 12.7%, encapsulation은 7% 순으로 전망하였다. 검사 · 측정 항목으로 분류한 장비 시장은 패턴검사가 33.1%, repair 21.3%, 점등 16.4% 순으로 나타났다.

OLED deposition equipment market, who can replace Canon Tokki?

OLED-applied products continue to expand in the smartphone market. Apple plans to launch new iPhones in application of OLED technology in late 2017, and Samsung Electronics will apply OLED to its entire smartphone production. Chinese set manufacturers are employing OLED for high-end smartphones, Samsung Display’s OLED production in China is also increasing.

In response to the growing demand for smartphone OLED, major display manufacturers such as Samsung Display, LG Display, Japan Display, BOE and CSOT are currently investing or planning to invest in Gen6 flexible AMOLED mass production lines.

The size of panel manufacturers’ Gen6 flexible AMOLED mass production lines to be set for two years between 2017 ~ 2018 is approx. 20 lines based on 15K, in which the deposition equipment, one of the key equipment for OLED mass production becomes a critical element for the production facility.

Currently, Samsung Display and LG Display are the sole manufacturers of flexible AMOLED, both of which are using Canon Tokki deposition equipment. Although SNU (merged into SFA), SFA, and ULVAC have also supplied deposition equipment for the mass production sized Gen4 ~ Gen5.5 to Chinese panel makers; Sunic system supplied Gen6 deposition equipment to LG Display in 2016, yet not reaching the mass production stage. Canon Tokki is the only deposition equipment supplier for Gen6.

As a result, panel makers want to purchase Canon Tokki equipment, but unfortunately Canon Tokki’s lack of capacity for mass-producing equipment cannot entirely satisfy the panel clients’ market demand.

Consequently SFA has taken over the SNU, securing a competitiveness of deposition equipment, and succeeded in winning the deposition equipment supply contract for the Gen5.5 mass production line at GVO and Royole in China. Sunic system also received additional deposition equipment order for Gen6 in the second half of 2016, and Applied Materials is also under development to supply deposition equipment to panel makers.

In summary, the deposition equipment market originally dominated by Canon Tokki continues to be challenged by new market players. It will be a great impact to the deposition equipment market if the new market players from the panel manufacturing industry can succeed in mass production with the deposition equipment supplied by new manufacturers.

OLED 증착장비 시장, Canon Tokki를 대체할 수 있는 후보는?

스마트폰 시장에서 OLED가 적용된 제품 비중이 지속적으로 확대되고 있다. Apple2017년 하반기 OLED를 적용한 신규 iPhone를 출시할 예정이고, 삼성전자도 모든 스마트폰 제품에 OLED를 적용할 것으로 전망된다. 중국 set 업체들도 high-end 스마트폰에 OLED를 채용하고 있으며, 삼성디스플레이의 중국향 OLED 생산량도 증가하고 있는 추세이다.

높아지고 있는 스마트폰용 OLED 수요에 대응하여 삼성디스플레이와 LG 디스플레이, Japan Display, BOE, CSOT등 주요 Display 제조업체에서 Gen6 규모의 flexible AMOLED 양산라인에 대한 투자를 진행중이거나 계획하고 있다.

2017~2018 2년동안 예상되는 panel 업체들의 Gen6 flexible AMOLED 양산라인 규모는 15K 기준 약 20개 라인으로 OLED 양산라인에서 핵심장비중 하나인 증착장비 확보가 이슈가 되고있다.

현재 flexible AMOLED를 양산하고 있는 업체는 Samsung Display LG Display가 유일하며 두업체 모두 Canon Tokki의 증착장비로 양산중에 있다. SNU(SFA에 합병됨)SFA, ULVAC 에서도 중국 panel 업체에 양산용 증착장비를 공급한 이력이 있지만 Gen4~Gen5.5 규모이며, Sunic system 2016년에 LG DisplayGen6용 증착장비를 납품하였지만 아직 양산단계에는 이르지 못했다. 따라서 Gen6용 증착장비를 양산한 업체는 Canon Tokki가 유일하다.

이로 인하여 panel 업체들에서도 Canon Tokki의 증착기 구매를 희망하지만 Canon Tokki의 증착장비 양산 capa가 부족하기 때문에 모든 panel 업체들의 요구를 들어 줄 수 없는 상황이다.

이에 SFASNU를 인수하며 증착장비에 대한 경쟁력을 확보하였으며 중국의 GVO RoyoleGen5.5 양산라인용 증착장비 수주에 성공하였다. Sunic system 2016년 하반기에 추가 Gen6용 증착장비를 수주하였으며, Applied Materials에서도 증착장비를 panel업체에 납품하기 위해 개발 중에 있다.

이처럼 Canon Tokki가 선점하고 있는 증착장비 시장에 후발 증착장비 제조업체들의 도전이 계속 되고있다. Canon Tokki에서도 순차적으로 증착장비 양산 capa.를 늘릴 것으로 전망되는 가운데 후발 증착장비 제조업체들이 공급한 증착장비로 panel 업체들이 양산에 성공할 수 있는지 여부가 앞으로의 증착장비 시장에 큰 영향을 미칠 전망이다.

Expect to hit 1 trillion won in OLED emitting material market for 2017

The OLED emitting material market is expected to exceed 1 trillion won in 2017.

The OLED emitting material market grew by 15%, about US$ 650 million versus 2015 according to “OLED emitting material Report-2nd data spread sheet” of Ubi research and it expects to achieve about US$ 980 million that over 1 trillion won in terms of Korean currency in 2017.

A researcher of Ubi Research said, “Despite continued price declines of OLED emitting materials, the 15% growth of the OLED materials market has analyzed due to the increased operation ratio of Samsung Display and LG Display in 2016. The OLED emitting material market in 2017 will be sharply grow through in earnest operating of A3 line of Samsung Display and E4 line of LG Display invested in 2016.”

Additionally mentioned, “The OLED emitting materials companies should pay attention to the high operation ratio of OLED production lines in China in 2017. Although the quantities of consumed for OLED materials of current Chinese company are less, but, the investment in mass production lines for Gen6 flexible AMOLED panels is underway, and sales volume of AMOLED panel companies in China may expect to grow sharply in the OLED emitting materials market. Therefore, the OLED emitting material companies should concentrate sales business for China in order to grow.

As such, the competition among related companies is expected to intensify because the OLED emitting material market would be increasing sharply in 2017.

Meanwhile, according to the report on the major performance by company in 2016, Samsung SDI (including Novaled) ranked first, followed by Idemisu Kosan (Japan) and UDC (US).

유비산업리서치 관계자는 “OLED 발광재료의 지속적인 가격하락에도 불구하고 2016년 삼성디스플레이와 LG Display의 가동률 증가에 따라 2016년 OLED 발광재료 시장이 15% 상승한 것으로 분석된다. 또한 2017년에는 2016년 투자가 진행된 LG Display의 E4 line 과 삼성디스플레이의 A3 line 이 본격적으로 가동됨에 따라 OLED 발광재료 시장도 큰 폭으로 성장할 것으로 기대된다.” 라고 밝혔다.

또한 “2017년에는 중국업체들의 OLED 양산라인 가동률이 높아질 것으로 예상되어 OLED 발광재료 업체들에서도 주시 해야할 것” 이라며, “현재 중국업체들의 OLED 발광재료 사용량은 적지만 대규모의 Gen6 flexible AMOLED panel 양산라인 투자가 진행 중이기 때문에 앞으로의 OLED 발광재료 시장에서 중국 AMOLED panel 업체향 매출이 급격히 성장할 것으로 기대된다. 따라서 OLED 발광재료 업체들의 성장을 위해서는 중국향 영업에 집중 해야할 것”이라 언급했다.

이처럼 2017년에는 OLED 발광재료 시장이 큰 폭으로 상승하면서 관련 업체들의 경쟁도 심화될 것으로 예상된다.

한편 보고서에 따르면 2016년 주요 업체별 실적에서는 Samsung SDI(Novaled 포함) 1위를 차지했으며, 일본의 Idemisu Kosan이 2위, 미국의 UDC가 3위로 조사되었다.

BOE’s Decision to Invest 46.5 Billion Yuan in Flexible OLED Line

According to a radio and TV source of Mianyang in Sìchuan Province, BOE has decided to invest
46.5 billion yuan(about 7.8 trillion KRW) in Gen6 flexible AMOLED production line.

BOE plans to begin construction in December 2016 and produce the items from 2019, and its capacity is 48K per month. It is expected to be used for producing high-end smartphones. BOE is carrying out 45K investment in Gen6 flexible AMOLED in Chengdu, and as part of this extension it is scheduled to put additional investment.

The investment in OLED has accelerated recently. Chinese panel companies including Visonox and EDO as well as BOE have decided to put investment in the production line of Gen6 flexible AMOLED panel and establish more lines.

BOE’s Gen6 flexible AMOLED panel production line where the investment has been decided or is still ongoing accounts for 75% of 120k that is total capacity of A3 Line, Gen6 flexible AMOLED production line of Samsung Display. If other Chinese panel companies’ investment that has been already decided or is ongoing is combined together, the investment exceeds Korea’s flexible AMOLED panel production capacity, even allowing for Samsung Display and LG Display’s additional investment.

With China’s active investment in flexible AMOLED panel production line, Chinese AMOLED panel market is expected to grow rapidly.

BOE, Flexible OLED 라인에 465억 위안 규모 투자 결정

10월 28일 중국 쓰촨성 면양시 라디오와 TV 소식통에 따르면 BOE가 6세대 flexible OLED생산라인에 465억 위안(약 7.8조원)을 투자하기로 결정했다.

2016년 12월에 착공을 시작하여 2019년부터 양산을 목표로 하고 있으며, capa는 월 48K의 규모이다. 이는 중소형 하이엔드 스마트폰에 투입될 예정이다. BOE는 중국 청두에도 6세대 flexible 월 45K 규모의 투자를 진행하고 있는 가운데 추가적으로 증설에 나선 것이다.

최근들어 중국의 OLED에 대한 투자 속도가 가속화 되고 있다. BOE 뿐만 아니라 Visonox, EDO등 중국 panel 업체들에서도 Gen6 flexible AMOLED panel 양산라인 투자 결정 및 증설을 진행 중에 있다.

현재까지 투자가 결정되거나 진행중인 BOE의 Gen6 flexible AMOLED panel 양산라인만 따져도삼성디스플레이의 Gen6 flexible AMOLED 양산라인인 A3 line의 총 capa인 약 120k의 75% 규모이다. 다른 중국 panel 업체들의 투자가 결정 capa와 검토중인 capa 합한다면 삼성디스플레이와 LG 디스플레이의 추가적인 투자를 감안하더라도 한국 flexible AMOLED panel 양산 capa를 넘어서는 수치이다.

이처럼 중국의 적극적인 flexible AMOLED panel 양산라인 투자가 진행으로 중국의 AMOLED panel 시장이 급속도로 성장할 것으로 예상된다.
