[IFA2022] ASUS, 17인치 foldable OLED 노트북 출격

최상의 프리미엄 스마트폰 시장의 핵심으로 급부상하고 있는 폴더블 폰에 이어, 노트북 시장도 폴더블 노트북이 회오리 바람을 몰고 온다.

폴더블 노트북은 앞서 레노버가 2019년에 ‘씽크패드 X1’ 폴드를 선보였으나 시장에서는 이렇다 할 반응을 이끌어 내지 못했다.

하지만 대만의 IT 업체인 ASUS는 CES2022에 이어 IFA2022에서도 폴더블 노트북을 주력 제품으로 Zenbook 17 Fold OLED를 전시하며 향후 폴더블 노트북 시장을 견인하기 위한 시장 개척에 돌입했다.

Zenbook 17 Fold OLED는 지난 1월 CES에서 처음 공개된 기기다. 터치를 지원하는 2.5K 패널의 foldable OLED를 내장했다. 무게는 키보드 미부착 상태에서 1.5kg이다. 전용 키보드는 자석으로 부착된다.

프리미엄 노트북으로서의 성능을 갖추기 위해 최신 인텔 CPU와 최대 16GB LPDDR5 메모리, 1테라바이트(TB) 피클(PCle) 4.0×4 NVMe M.2 SSD를 탑재했다.

디스플레이 성능은 100% DCI-P3 색 영역과 2560×1920의 높은 해상도, 0.2ms(밀리세컨드)의 빠른 응답 시간을 제공한다.

Zenbook 17 Fold OLED는 완전히 펼치면 17.3인치 태블릿 PC로 변신한다. 내장형 킥스탠드를 사용하면 태블릿을 독립형으로 사용할 수 있다. 키보드와 마우스는 블루투스를 통해 연결할 수 있다.

폴딩 내구성을 확보하기 위해서 3만 회의 폴딩 테스트를 견딘 힌지를 사용하고 있다. 하단 사진은 전시장에서 폴딩 테스트를 직접 시연하고 있는 모습이다. 견고한 180도 힌지 덕분에 Zenbook 17 Fold OLED는 12.5인치(1920×1280) 노트북이나 태블릿 PC가 될 수 있다.

“If foldable Smartphone is launched and commercialized in earnest, the high-priced tablet PC market is likely to disappear.”

Choong-hoon Yi, president of UBI Research, said in ‘the Latest OLED Technology Trends Seminar’ held at COEX in Seoul on the 26th April, 2018.

He also mentioned “The foldable smart phone is expected to be implemented as a 5.2 inch display with a 7.2 inch display folded in half. In addition, a bar-type display is to be added to the outside to check time and other information.”

Yi analyzed, “Foldable Smartphone can provide a momentum to revitalize the stagnant Smartphone market, and a positive aspect that can induce new investments to secure a sufficient number of panels due to the increase in the display screen size.”.

“If foldable smartphones are launched and commercialized, there is a possibility that the expensive tablet PC market will be disappeared. Foldable Smartphone can bring the tablet PC market which is being led by Apple.”He added.

Yi then predicted that foldable smart phones would implement 4K since their screen size is larger than normal smart phones. “OLED smart phones, which currently remain in QHD resolution, are expected to be difficult to implement it in five years due to the problems in masks, wiring widths and exposure systems; however, foldable smart phones are more free from these problems.” He said.

Finally, Yi pointed out the market success factors of the foldable smart phone as pioneering the Smartphone market for over $ 1,000, development of dedicated applications/contents and early establishment of 5G communication technology for data transmission such as video streaming.

Meanwhile, he estimated that OLED panels for foldable smartphones would be shipped to 100 thousand units in 2018, and 2.83 million units would be shipped in 2022.

폴더블 스마트폰, tablet PC 시장 흡수 가능할까

“폴더블 스마트폰이 출시 되어 본격적으로 상용화가 된다면 고가의 tablet PC 시장은 소멸 될 가능성이 있다”

지난 26일 서울 코엑스에서 열린 ‘OLED 최신기술 동향 세미나’에서 유비리서치 이충훈 대표는 최근 이슈가 되고 있는 폴더블 스마트폰과 관련하여 위와 같이 밝혔다.

이 대표는 “폴더블 스마트폰은 7.2 inch의 디스플레이가 반으로 접혀 5.2 inch 디스플레이로 구현 될 것으로 예상된다”며, “추가적으로 외부에 시간이나 기타 정보 확인을 위한 bar 형태의 디스플레이가 추가 될 것”이라 언급했다.

이 대표는 “폴더블 스마트폰이 정체되어 있는 스마트폰 시장을 활성화 시킬 수 있는 모멘텀을 제공할 수 있으며, 디스플레이 화면 크기 증대로 인해 부족해지는 패널 수량 확보를 위한 신규 투자도 유발 할 수 있는 긍정적인 면을 제공 할 수 있다”고 분석했다.

반면, “폴더블 스마트폰이 출시 되어 상용화 될 경우 고가의 tablet PC 시장이 소멸 될 가능성이 있다”며, “폴더블 스마트폰이 현재 Apple이 주도하고 있는 tablet PC 시장을 가져올 수 있다”고 언급했다.

이어서 이 대표는 폴더블 스마트폰은 일반 스마트폰보다 화면 크기가 더 크기 때문에 4K 구현도 가능하다고 예상하였다. 현재 QHD 해상도에 머물고 있는 OLED 스마트폰은 마스크와 배선 넓이, 노광기 문제로 인해 5년 이내 구현이 힘들 것으로 예상되지만 폴더블 스마트폰은 이러한 문제에서 좀 더 자유롭다고 언급했다.

마지막으로 이 대표는 폴더블 스마트폰의 시장 성공 요소로 1,000 달러 이상 스마트폰 시장의 개척과 전용 application/contents 개발, 동영상 스트리밍 등 데이터 전송을 위한 5G 통신 기술 조기 정착을 언급했다.

한편, 이 대표는 2018년 폴더블 스마트폰용 OLED 패널이 10만대 출하 될 것으로 예상하였으며, 2022년에는 283만대가 출하 될 것으로 예상했다.
