삼성전자는 29일(현지시각) 미국 뉴욕에서 Un Pack2017 행사를 통해 갤럭시 S8과 S8+를 공개하였다.
갤럭시 S8의 크기는 전작인 갤럭시 S7 대비 큰 차이가 없다. 그러나 갤럭시 S8은 bezel을 최소화하고 홈버튼을 없애며 그 자리를 디스플레이로 채웠다. 삼성전자는 이러한 방식으로 한 손으로 안정감 있게 스마트폰을 사용할 수 있으면서 더 넓은 화면을 원하는 소비자의 니즈를 해소시켰다.
OLED를 제조하는데 필요한 부품과 소재는 기판을 포함하여 TFT, OLED, encapsulation, touch screen, cover window, drive IC 등이 있다.
삼성전자 스마트폰 Galaxy에 의해 주도되던 모바일 기기용 OLED 시장에 Apple과 중국 기업들이 동참함에 의해 삼성디스플레이를 비롯하여 중국 디스플레이 업체들의 Gen6 투자가 봇물 터지듯 증가하고 있다.

With the joining of Apple and Chinese companies into the OLED mobile phones market which has been led by Samsung’s Smartphone Galaxy, Samsung Display and Chinese Display companies are increasing their investment in Gen 6.
OLED-applied products continue to expand in the smartphone market. Apple plans to launch new iPhones in application of OLED technology in late 2017, and Samsung Electronics will apply OLED to its entire smartphone production. Chinese set manufacturers are employing OLED for high-end smartphones, Samsung Display’s OLED production in China is also increasing.
스마트폰 시장에서 OLED가 적용된 제품 비중이 지속적으로 확대되고 있다. Apple은 2017년 하반기 OLED를 적용한 신규 iPhone를 출시할 예정이고, 삼성전자도 모든 스마트폰 제품에 OLED를 적용할 것으로 전망된다. 중국 set 업체들도 high-end 스마트폰에 OLED를 채용하고 있으며, 삼성디스플레이의 중국향 OLED 생산량도 증가하고 있는 추세이다.
The area of display for a smartphone is getting wider.
The display area (hereinafter as D.A.) indicates the display size versus a set size. At the IMID 2016 business forum, the chief of Samsung Display, Park, Won-sang said that “The D.A. may be a core element to overcome the limit of its size through the portability of a smartphone.” and, “henceforth, the full-screen smartphone with more than 90% of D.A. will be released and take the lead the market.

Display area(이하 D.A)는 set size 대비 display size를 의미한다. 지난 IMID 2016 비즈니스 포럼에서 삼성 디스플레이의 박원상 수석은 “D.A는 스마트폰의 휴대성에 따른 size 한계를 극복할 수 있는 핵심 요소가 될 것” 이라며, “앞으로는 90%이상의 D.A를 가진 full screen smartphone이 출시될 것이며 시장을 주도할 것”이라고 말했다.
